You are asleep when your mother calls. You do not want to talk to your mother. You throw the phone away from you and go back to sleep. What is it that repels you from mother? When you were born your bodies knew the way, you were not told to find the teat, she was not told to hold that tightly. Yet here she is. The woman is calling you and it's 25 years later. The thing about blood is that it runs thicker than water.

When I close my eyes and imagine the collection of humans which I would like to call my family, they are not holding themselves in a way through which blood may run between them comparable to water. If my family were suspended in a giant glass container of amniotic fluid I would much prefer that fluid's being water as to it being blood.
